Flag of the noble house Morkovští of Zástřizl

It is the year 2008 and in the local church of St. Jacob workers are replacing floor tiles. During this work, it happened that a completely new and unknown burial chamber was found. There was a torso of an iron helmet and several pieces of fabric, remains of a flag.  Those objects were carried during the entombment of a member of the local nobility. Considering 90% humidity and the presence of bacteria it is almost a miracle that the fabric was preserved. The flag was 304 cm long and 169 cm wide. During its creation, the technique of painting on silk was used.

Restorer Vendulka Otavská during her work. She found out that the size of this flag was 169 x 304 cm and its creator used the technique of painting on silk.

On the left there is a coat of arms which belonged to the noble house Morkovský of Zástřizl. There are two red feathers and one white, a golden crown and silver lily.

Mainly the parts of the flag which were covered with a thick layer of colouring or those with fringes were preserved to this day.

On the right side there are red little flames with golden or silver sparkles and the part of a red ribbon.

Only a part of writing is preserved and that is the reason why the meaning has never been solved. It may be the motto of this house – RELIGIO ET PATRIA.
