Jews and their everydayness

Lives of Jews were and are driven by many rules and so it differs in some ways from the life of the majority. We would like to show you some objects which are connected with Jewishness. We also recommend a visit of a local synagogue and Jewish municipal house. 

You can see several meals which are typical for Jews: Kugel, a baked casserole made from egg noodles, fish salad or hummus. Jewish cooking is bound by several rules.

The most important of them are written there:

1)            It is allowed to eat meat of animals which are even-toed and ruminant.

2)            You can eat only fish which have scales as well as fins.

3)            Consummation of poultry is allowed.

4)            You mustn´t eat carnivores.   

5)            All insects, amphibians and reptiles are forbidden.

6)            Dairy products and meat cannot be combined.  

Special bread in Jewish cuisine - challah

INGREDIENTS

1 cup lukewarm water

2 teaspoons active dry or instant yeast

4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/4 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons salt

2 large eggs

1 large egg yolk

1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil, such as canola

 

Passover Seder Plate

The Passover Seder plate is a special plate containing symbolic foods eaten or displayed at the Passover Seder.

  • Zeroa (shankbone)
  • Beitza (roasted hard-boiled egg)
  • Maror /Chazeret (horseradish)
  • Maror /Chazeret (onion)
  • Charoset
  • Karpas (parsley)

A kippah - is a cap worn by Jewish males to fulfil the customary requirement that the head has to be covered. In this picture there is also a kippah for a baby – it has two laces for lacing under a chin.
